There's certainly going to be an impact on new builds with this. Cost estimates are between £3000 and £5000 and areas where house prices are low seem likely to suffer most. If margins are tight already then the extra cost could see new building stop altogether in some places.
On the other hand, it will make new homes far better protected. Don't know what the statistics are for house fires but reducing them has to be a good thing.
As for the chips Ericmark, I don't think you have to worry - sprinkler systems have heat sensitive triggers requiring a constant temperature of around 70 degrees C or so before they are set off.
