Loft Insulation 3 years, 8 months ago #3900

Hi all

I only have one inch of insulation in the loft and believe I should have 270mm or ten inches?
What is the best way to get the job done.
I intend to take out the old insulation and replace with new stuff.
Do I use 170mm and then 100mm? Do I use the wool stuff first between the joists then a nice space blanket (those sealed types ones) over the top in the opposite direction?

Already replied to this question ?
but here goes again

Hi
The best bet is to fit the first layer of insulation in-between the joists so the 100mm is the best bet for the first layer.
Then lay the 170mm across the joists so they cross over the 1st layer.
fibreglass, space blanket, or one of the many others available, have a search on the internet for Loft Insulation and it will bring up all of the different types available.
Never had a problem with the fibreglass type, though a mask, disposable coverall & gloves are advisable.
Its usually cheaper as well

Thanks for the reply.
I've had it done and it's a massive improvement now.
However I want to put a few of the boards back up so I can store a few boxes up there. I have been told to get some more wood and put it on top of the existing joists so it covers the insulation then put the boards on top of that kind of raised.
Is there a simpler way? Can I not take some of the 170mm insulation off and put the boards over the 100mm that's between the joists?

Yes you can.
The boards themselves will act as insulation.
I have done a couple of roof voids and 250mm on one side, 100mm and boards on the other

Good advice there from CMDPS and the boards will give a bit of insulation like he says. The other thing is that if like most people it'll be old boxes of stuff stored on top, they too will act as insulation

Another option is using something like Xtratherms loft boards which are pre insulated and tongue and grooved so they're easy to lay. Easy option as well if you just want a walkway between the hatch and any tanks etc

We use this spray foam insulation, which is a green product. Just give them a call and they'll direct you to the best solutions.
