Make sure that the flex or cable has already been correctly connected to the appliance itself.

Connecting the appliance

We’ll deal with the connection of the appliance to the unit first.

For those with an outlet though the faceplate, feed the flex or cable through the faceplate first.

peeling back sheath

For cable

Cut through the outer sheath with a sharp knife taking care not to cut into the insulation of the conductors. Peel back the sheath and fold over the knife blade to trim. Separate the conductors and trim back the insulation of each by about 1/2". With cable, you must also insulate the earth conductor with green and yellow sleeving, leaving it with 1/2" exposed bare conductor like the others.

stripping flex

For flex

Separate the conductors and trim back the insulation of each by about 1/2". Twist the individual filaments of each conductor.

Undo the screws for the terminals and insert and secure these conductors as follows:

Red or brown to the terminal marked live load.
Black or blue to the terminal marked neutral load.
Green/yellow to the terminal marked with the earth symbol.

Fasten the flex or cable with the cord grip provided which guards against them connections being pulled loose.

Connecting the power supply

Now we can sort out the power supply connection.

The cable should be stripped and prepared as above – you may have one or two depending upon whether this unit is being installed in a ring main or as a spur from a ring main.

Insert and secure the conductors as follows:

Red to the terminal marked mains live.
Black to the terminal marked mains neutral.
Green/yellow to the terminal marked with the earth symbol.

Finally, double check that all your connections are firmly secured and that the insulated part butts up to the terminals leaving no exposed conductor.

Ease the face plate back to the box, carefully folding the cables into it as you go. Secure with the retaining screws tightening them alternately to draw the unit back evenly to the surface.

Once you are sure that all work has been completed correctly, replace the fuse for the circuit, switch the power back on, and test.
