Diy paint ideas - sparkling greys

Steel aluminium and chrome influence on paint colour
Sparkling Grey takes its influence from both man-made and natural environments. Grey is the colour of steel, aluminium and chrome, but also wintry skies and pebbles on a shore. The base of the palette captures the tones of more manufactured greys, while cool blues and earthy browns are introduced into the colour scheme to create both light and depth.
Judy Smith, Crown’s UK Colour Consultant, says: “Grey has grown in popularity during the last year, and it will continue to be a pivotal colour in the home in 2007.” Colours in the Sparkling Grey palette range from cool soft greys such as Sketch Book to moodier tones like Herringbone from the Crown Fashion for Walls™ collection. For a more vibrant, steely look try combining grey with bright turquoise like Hollywood Fashion For Walls™ matt emulsion. Alternatively mixing deeper, warmer greys with other earthy tones produces a more natural look - shades such as Sidewalk or Crochet Fashion For Walls™ matt emulsion work well.

Creating interest by utilising strong changes of texture
For a different take on a grey room scheme, Judy Smith shares her top tips for using grey at home. “This season one of the most up-to-the-minute ways of working with grey centres around creating interest by utilising strong changes of texture. On walls, metallic and suede paints can be used next to flat matt for contrast. You can add this change of texture with stencils, either large and organic or small and geometric, just keep the pattern to one defined area of a wall. For a more adventurous effect, try dividing a whole wall horizontally with matt below and shine above or suede below and smooth above.”
Crown has a selection of paints for creating textural contrast, for example Silver Spoon Easyclean emulsion for a flat matt finish, White Suede emulsion for texture and Sophistication metallic emulsion for shimmer and shine. For a really intense grey specifically for use in the Kitchen or Bathroom, try Slate Grey from the Kitchen & Bathroom emulsion range.

One thing is for sure; grey is a sophisticated and self-confident paint choice and is the perfect colour for modern homes and modern living.
