How house plants help clean the air in our homes as well as boost creativity and energy levels. Plants do more than just brighten up our home
Plants do so much more than just brighten up an otherwise boring space. They add colour, but they also improve the air quality and remove pollutants from your home. In much the same way as trees are essential to the health of our planet by soaking up much of the CO2 we produce, plants can achieve the same thing on a smaller scale inside our homes.
Studies have found that the air inside our homes can be up to 12 times more polluted than that outside and considering that many of us can spend up to 90% of our time indoors either at work or in our homes, this can be a real problem. Pollution inside can come from paints, adhesives, building materials and even the water we drink. Exposure to these pollutants can cause cancers, nausea, headaches, asthma and respiratory problems
It has been found that having plants around the home can reduce these symptoms . A study by Nasa found that house plants can reduce the number of toxins in the air by 87% within just 24 hours. The result of this is improvement in both physical and psychological health. It recommended that we have 15 good sized plants per 1800 square-foot home.
It is also thought that plants can actually make people happier. It has been found that hospital patients who face a window overlooking a garden recovered more quickly than those who looked at a wall. People who work in offices which have plants as part of their décor are more likely to feel fulfilled in their jobs and have higher levels of morale. It has also been found that plants can boost creativity and improve work rates.
Plants not only clear the air but the added colour can have a positive effect on people as well. Brightly coloured flowering plants have been shown to improve the energy levels of people around them and causing them to release endorphins and adrenaline as a natural pick me up throughout the day.
In China plants also are thought to improve spiritual well-being. Feng Shui proponents believe that plants can circulate positive energy and hide sharp edges around the home. It is thought that energy will not flow around a home with too many edges and angles. Hanging plants are also thought to reconnect humans to the ancient power of plants.
