Preventing Allergies in the Home
In recent years it seems as though allergies have become more an more prevalent. Some researchers have suggested that we live in environments which are too clean and do not develop proper immune systems. But regardless of what may have caused the problem, once you have an allergy it is very uncomfortable and can affect your life in surprising ways. A lack of sleep due to breathing difficulties is one major discomfort many allergy sufferers will be aware of and nothing is worse than itchy and sore eyes.
Aside from daily cleaning and closing the doors and windows (which sounds like a lot of hard work!), how can we protect our families from these types of distressing symptoms?
Tips for reducing allergy symptoms
- Have hard floors rather than carpets which collect dust and animal hair. Even regular hoovering won't keep carpet perfectly clean. Mop floors regularly to pick up any dust.
- Avoid heavy curtains, cushions and other soft furnishing. Go for a minimalist look. Wooden blinds are better as long as they are kept dust free.
- Keep windows open. This will help to prevent damp which is a major cause of allegories. During the hayfever season this may not be possible however.
- Keep the house cool during the winter months. Dust mites thrive in a warm environment.
- Use a vacuum with a HEPA filtration system. This will filter out pet hairs and other allergens. They also came as part of an air filter unit. These can be noisy and expensive to run, but are very effective.
- Change bedding regularly and wash on a high temperature setting. Fold back the bedding during the day to allow the bed to dry out.
- Use a dehumidifier and an extractor fan in bathrooms and kitchens to prevent condensation. Mould spores are very dangerous when breathed in.
- Do not dry clothes indoors.
- Try to keep pets outside as much as possible and do not allow cats or dogs onto beds.
- Use non-allergenic cleaners around the home and always dust with a damp cloth and dry dusting only moves the dust around the house.
It does appear that the only real answer to allergies in the home is regular cleaning and lots of circulating air. It is hard work, but for the comfort of your family and everyone getting a good nights sleep it can be worth the effort.
