Top 10 Tips For Keeping Your New Kitchen Looking That Way
Buying a new kitchen is an expensive job which can take weeks to complete. You save for months to pay for it and then spend a fortune on ready meals and takeaways while you are waiting for your brand new kitchen to be ready. So you will want to look after it when it is finally handed over to you. But how do you keep that new kitchen looking sparkling clean and fresh for as long as possible?
Keep it clean
This sounds rather obvious, but regular cleaning will help your kitchen to stay brand new looking for much longer. Rather than using harsh chemicals on your units and tiles once a month, a regular clean with a mild cleaner will avoid any damage that a harsh cleaner might do.
Be careful with worktops
Even the most expensive granite worktop is susceptible to marks and even scratches. You should invest in trivets to prevent hot dishes ruining the look of your worktop and never cut anything directly on the surface.
Use blinds on your windows
If your windows face south and you have sun streaming in all day, you need to protect the colour of your kitchen units. Wood can easily fade when exposed to light and coloured or painted doors and walls can also be affected by sunlight.
Shield your oven
Ovens can give off plenty of heat, even when the door is shut. For this reason it is wise to place guards or shields on the units next to the oven door. Or design your kitchen so that the doors are away from the oven if possible. Blistering and peeling can occur in severe cases.
Use mould free grout
Certain types of grout are designed for use in bathrooms and kitchen and claim to stay white and mould free even if they get wet often. It is a good idea to use this on areas behind your kitchen sink. Yellowing grout can be one of the first signs that a kitchen is past it's best.
Use a floor tile sealant
Some types of floor tiles are very porous. This is often the case with natural stone. It is essential that these tiles are sealed prior to being grouted. Over time an unsealed floor tile will develop water stains and marks which are difficult to remove.
Baby oil on your stainless steel
This old trick is one of the best ways to keep dirt and dust away from your stainless steel appliances. After cleaning with a soft cloth, simply wipe on some baby oil. You only need a small amount and this will prevent food and dust from sticking to the surface and will make it easy to wipe away. It also helps it retain its sheen.
Use a splatter guard
These guards are great when frying. They prevent hot oil and fat from being sprayed around the kitchen. Cleaning oil and fat off walls and units can be difficult as even the best cleaners have trouble cutting through it. Often you are left with yellowish spots and greasy looking walls. So prevention is the best cure.
Keep up with DIY
As soon as you see a problem, get in there and fix it. Whether this is a loose door handle or a cracked tile. Little things like this can ruin the overall look and are best fixed before further damage is done. Don't put it off.
If all else fails
Your kitchen can be brought back to life by putting in new replacement kitchen doors, repainting the walls, replacing the worktop or re-grouting the tiles. These are bigger jobs, but worthwhile for getting that fresh look back again.
