Panel Curtains and Blinds

Finding solutions for curtains is one of those problems which seems never ending. All it takes is for your home to have windows of an odd shape or size and all of the standard types of curtains are no good. You find that you must engage a designer and have your curtains custom made – a process which is prohibitive when it comes to cost. Some curtain manufacturers have come up with something totally new and which offers much more than just the usual privacy features of normal curtains.

Panel curtains run on a rail system and hang flat either from the internal walls or even from the ceiling. They can be used to cover windows, divide rooms or even to hide televisions or bookshelves. When not in use, they can be pushed out of the way or to one side of the room.

These curtains usually run on both a top and bottom rail; a feature which ensures that it remains flat to the wall or window. Panels can be bought which are much more than just a way of blocking the sun; they often come in interesting designs and work in a similar way to a feature wall. The fabric can be as light as required and as it is held in place by the lower rail it will never be affected by draughts or open windows.

Generally each panel is 60cm wide and come in lengths of around 300cm. These panels can easily be cut to size and adjusted depending on the length of the window. If there is not enough wall space at the top of the window, a special rail can be purchased which means the panel can be hung from the ceiling. This type of fitting works well when the panel will be used as a room divider.

It is even possible to layer the panels to create different effects. For example, a sheer fabric can be used in front of a patterned one to create a number of looks. During the day the sheer panel can be used on its own to diffuse the light and the two panels can be used together in the evening for more privacy.

It is easy to sew your own panel curtains. Simply measure the material required leaving enough extra for the seams. Buy the required rails and fittings and ensure that the top and bottom seams are wide enough to accommodate the rods and fittings.

Curtain panels are a great option if you want the look of a modern and professionally fitted curtaining system, but without the additional cost. They are versatile and easy to use. If your windows don't fit the normal profile, then this could be the way to get your privacy and good looks at the same time.
