Freezing and snowy weather conditions are proving to be good for DIY stores around the country as councils have been turning to them in a desperate bid to get further supplies of grit, salt and sand.
In addition, many stores have reported increased sales of shovels, insulation and heaters. B&Q in Carlisle has reported that their stocks of grit and salt are running low as local people have been buying it to be prepared for the worst. The store manager has said that they made a huge order, but only a small proportion was able to be delivered as the local councils appear to holding it back for their own use. Supermarkets have also reported a huge increase in the sale of rock salt – usually used for cooking.
