The country's largest builders merchant, Travis Perkins is expecting a good year following a pick up in the construction industry. The retailer also includes Wickes, which has seen a slight downturn in the last year.
Despite the bad weather experienced in the first part of this year, Travis Perkins has seen an improvement in the last three months. In fact, stores which had been open for more than a year experienced an average increase in sales of 1.4%. This is compared to a fall of 2.7% in the first 2 months of the year.
Unfortunately Wickes has not shared in this improvement. They have had a drop in sales of 1.7% since the beginning of the year despite sales of kitchens and bathrooms improving.
Chief Executive Geoff Cooper said the group was pleased with the overall progress, but he thought that consumers were still waiting until things settled down after the election. He pointed out that the company still has market share despite the difficult conditions.
