Fears of Increased Fuel Poverty

British Gas has announced this week that they will be increasing their gas prices from December 10th. It is thought that the increase will lead to a £1.50 increase in fuel bills each week. With a cold winter on the cards this could lead to more fuel poverty for many, especially the elderly.

Scottish and Southern Energy have also reported that they will be increasing their prices next month with customers expecting to pay almost 10% more for their energy.

Phil Bentley from British Gas has commented that the company does realise that the increase comes at a difficult time for many of their customers, but that the company is encouraging people to keep their homes more energy efficient. He points out that British Gas have installed 120,000 energy efficient boilers and 270,000 loft and cavity wall insulations this year.

He further points out that those over 60 could be eligible for free insulation and those on low incomes can apply for an energy grant.

Experts from comparison sites are encouraging customers to compare all of the best energy deals available and to switch if they find a better deal.
